Corporate NPS vs Individual NPS: Key Differences

Corporate NPS is offered through an employer, whereas Individual NPS is managed directly by an individual. The main differences between Corporate NPS and Individual NPS are in linking to employment, contribution pattern, employer involvement, tax benefits, and portability.

What is Individual NPS?

Individual NPS refers to a retirement savings account opened directly by an eligible individual without involving an employer. Also known as the All Citizen Model, Individual NPS allows every salaried employee, self-employed person, or even a freelancer to choose the contribution pattern and decide on their investment decisions, including the pension fund manager and allocation. Individual NPS is an individual account-based approach to securing retirement benefits under the National Pension System.

What is Corporate NPS?

Corporate NPS falls under the Organised Sector Model, wherein a subscriber’s employment details are registered with a Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA), and contributions are made to the NPS account under the Cost to Company (CTC) framework. In other words, both employee and employer can contribute to a single retirement savings account under the Corporate NPS. This type of account is opted by organisations, including government and private limited companies, to provide additional retirement benefits to their employees.

Corporate NPS vs Individual NPS: Key Differences

These are some key differences between Corporate NPS vs Individual NPS:

Account Opening and Eligibility

The fundamental difference between Corporate NPS vs Individual NPS is in how the account is opened. Individual NPS is opened directly by any eligible individual, whereas Corporate NPS mandates that your employer must first register under the Corporate NPS model.

Contribution Structure

While both Individual and Corporate NPS allow a subscriber to choose their contribution pattern, the latter also involves contribution from the employer. However, such employer contributions are optional in most cases.

Investment Choice and Account Control

Both Individual and Corporate NPS allow the subscriber to choose a pension fund manager and investment pattern. However, while Individual NPS offers complete flexibility in making contributions, Corporate NPS involves deduction via salary credit if the employer’s contribution is involved.

Employment Dependency

It is important to note that Individual NPS is independent of employment, whereas Corporate NPS involves the establishment of an employer-employee relationship.

Portability

Although you may transfer funds from one NPS account to another, your Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) remains the same. In other words, you cannot have two separate accounts under Corporate NPS vs Individual NPS since only one active NPS account can exist for a single PAN.

Corporate NPS vs Individual NPS: Tax Benefits

Is there a difference between Corporate NPS vs Individual NPS regarding tax benefits? Both Individual and Corporate NPS offer substantial tax benefits under Income Tax Act 1956. For example, subscribers can claim a deduction on contributions made to their NPS accounts under section 80CCD(1) and an additional deduction of up to ₹50,000 under section 80CCD(1B). However, while Individual NPS does not qualify for any deduction on employer contributions, Corporate NPS allows deduction of up to 10% of salary or ₹50,000 under section 80CCD(2) if applicable. Therefore, if your employer contributes to your NPS account directly, you may claim additional tax benefits under section 80CCD(2).

Corporate NPS vs Individual NPS: Changing Jobs

What happens to my Corporate NPS if I change jobs? First, note that you cannot close your NPS account simply because you have changed jobs. Instead, your existing account will remain active, and you can continue contributing to it. Ideally, if your new employer offers Corporate NPS, you can begin making contributions to a new NPS account. However, if they do not offer Corporate NPS, you can continue contributing to the same account individually, as you will be able to make individual contributions to your NPS account, whether you have opted for Corporate or Individual NPS.

Can I switch from Corporate NPS to Individual NPS?

In general, you can continue contributing to your NPS account, whether you have opted for Corporate or Individual NPS. However, if you wish to change from one account to the other, you will need to inform your CRA about the change in your subscriber status once you change your employment status. For example, if you leave your new job, you can request to change your NPS account from Corporate to Individual, but your PRAN will remain the same. As such, make sure that your KYC documents are updated correctly so that you can begin making individual contributions to your NPS account.

Corporate NPS or Individual NPS: Which One is Better?

It is important to understand that both Corporate NPS and Individual NPS have their own pros and cons, and the choice between the two depends on individual circumstances, including employer options, contribution preferences, tax strategy, and retirement savings goals. Corporate NPS can be a better option if:

Your employer offers Corporate NPS

Your employer is willing to contribute to your NPS account

You wish to save additional retirement benefits on top of your provident fund or gratuity.

On the other hand, Individual NPS can be a better option if:

Your employer does not offer Corporate NPS

You are a self-employed professional, freelancer, or contractor

You wish to make individual contributions to your NPS account regardless of your employment status.
